The major significance of hyperlipidaemia, particularly hypercholesterolaemia, is that it is one of the main risk factors for the development of premature atherosclerotic complications, with the principal lipoprotein-related cardiovascular risk factors being increased levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and low levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL).
Recognition and treatment of the atherogenic disorders of lipoprotein metabolism can be of value in the prevention of atherosclerosis, and in some cases, can even result in regression of established lesions. The diagnosis and management of disorders of lipoproteins require an understanding of lipoprotein structure, function, and metabolism.
